Parents of LGBTs speak up!:MY CHILD*

Several weeks ago we’ve interviewed “Mother Pınar” as a mother of a transgender and wanted her to tell us her experiences about accepting her child as the way she(former he)  is.

Infact, Mother Pınar is one of the founders of LISTAG group with another Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transsexual parents.LİSTAG (Families of LGBTs in İstanbul) is a voluntary suppport and solidarity group for families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans people in Turkey since January 2008.

And now, in February 2013 their documentary BENİM ÇOCUĞUM-MY CHILD will be screened in Turkey, This extraordinary film’s premiere will be on IF ISTANBUL Festival which is one of the most successful film festivals of Turkey. IF ISTANBUL  always embraces the queer culture with private sections as “rainbow”.

MY CHILD’s director Can Candan is a documentary filmmaker and an academic. He holds a BA from Hampshire College in Film and Video, and an MFA from Temple University in Film and Media Arts. He was a faculty member, department chair and director of the MA program at Istanbul Bilgi University’s Film and TV department from 2000-2005. He taught at Sabancı University between 2005-2009 and has been a faculty member at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey since 2007. He is also a founding member of docIstanbul – Centre for Documentary Studies. MY CHILD is his third feature documentary film.
